Is Hemp Bedding Worth the Investment?

By: Klacie Groene PR and Communications Intern for Wyoming Hemp Company

Spoiler Alert-It is!

If you have livestock, chickens or small animals you already know about the investment it takes to get quality bedding. When we hear animal bedding we think of pine shavings, straw, cedar fiber and possibly pellets.  What if we told you that there is an alternative that saves you time, money and improves the health of yourself and animals. That mentioned alternative- Hemp bedding.

Many wonder if hemp bedding is worth the investment?

Short Answer: Yes! Long Answer: Let us explain!

What is Hemp Bedding?

Hemp bedding is made from the hurd (inner core) of the hemp plant. The hurd is processed into ½ inch or smaller fractions.  Hemp is ultra absorbent, low dust, and has natural odor control.

Unlike bedding competitors, hemp doesn’t just work, it works harder and cleaner for longer.

5 Reasons Hemp bedding is worth the investment

  1. You use less making it last longer

  • Ultra absorbent: Hemp absorbs 4x its weight in moisture

  • Cleaning is easier: Spot cleaning is easier, allowing users to only clean every 3-4 weeks

  • Less product needed: Cleaning your pens, stalls and coop less saves on the amount of product needed.

  1. It’s cleaner for you and your animals                         Traditional bedding carries dust which can irritate eyes, lungs, and skin of not only humans but animals as well. Hemp bedding is low dust making it ideal bedding for:

  • Chickens

  • Rabbits

  • Goats

  • Pigs

  • Horses

  • Cattle

  • Small Animals

  • Anyone with respiratory problems

  1. No harsh smells

Hemp is naturally antimicrobial and controls odors without any chemicals. This means:

  • Less ammonia build-up

  • No need for added fragrances

  • A fresher smelling barn and coop

This is helpful in the warmer months and fair season.

  1. It’s Compost Ready

Used bedding breaks down easier quickly, helping create a rich and balanced compost and fertilizer. This saves you even more money!

Instead of throwing away your waste, you are completing a cycle and turning it into fertilizer.

Composting your used bedding is a complete cycle: field to coop or barn to garden and back to the field.

  1. It’s Sustainable

Industrial Hemp is a low input crop:

  • Grows quickly with little water

  • Requires no pesticides

  • Renews soil with deep root structure

  • Sequesters more carbon than most trees

Final thoughts

Are you still on the fence about investing in better bedding?  Think of all the time and money you would save.

  • Less cleaning: Less cleaning means more time to

  • Fewer respiratory issues: Low dust means a cleaner breathing for both animals and owners

  • Less odors: Natural odor protection keeps the

  • Longer-lasting product: With the absorbency of the product, full

  • A compostable, earth-friendly solution:

The answer is yes, hemp bedding is worth the investment- not just for your overall health but for the health of your animals.
